Paul Milne has had to wait to celebrate success.
There was a glint in the eye of Paul Milne as he enjoyed a cold beer with his first premiership medallion as a South Warrandyte player around his neck. And there is no one more deserving of that success at the Hawks than the man we affectionally call “Milne-dog”.
Milney is a Club legend. A swashbuckling left-handed bat, Paul played 1s throughout the halcyon days of the 00s but was a heartbreak story, just missing out on GF selection on more than one occasion.
A great club man at heart, Milney continued service to the club, captaining the 2s for several years. He taught what senior cricket is all about to many young players who today make up the club's core, including Sean McMahon, Tom Hall, Luke McIlroy, Darcy Price and Al Price.
Milney’s work extended to off the field as well, serving on the Committee for 5 years, including as the Vice President.
Paul’s counts his greatest achievements as his children and he had the pleasure of coaching of son Jordan for 3 years in the juniors. Jordan is a real “chip off the old block” and has so many of the same mannerisms as Paul on the field, and this took him all the way to play district cricket at Fitzroy-Doncaster.
Over the past few years, Milney has become a key figure in the vets, and this is where he finally found the ultimate team success that had eluded him for almost 25 years. Our Vets chased down an incredible 190 to win with 9 balls to spare.
Whilst you are more likely to see Paul up at Bonnie Doon on weekends these days, he still makes time to play vets and enjoy a beer or two while watching the seniors throughout the year.
A true club legend – congratulations to you Milney, a premiership player for the South Warrandyte Cricket Club.
